Gustavadolf

Gustavadolf

The statue of Gustaf II Adolf (aka Gustavus Adolfus) founder of Gothenburg is missing from the main square at present, undergoing restoration. In the meantime this version of his plumed hat and pointing finger is floating in the Hamnkanal.

For two tourist-style photos of Gustavadolf’s statue (from last year) click here.

While I was taking the above photo, this young man got down on his knees to worship the statue …

…or perhaps he was drunk and throwing up. Not sure.

Torchlight at Götaplatsen 2

By torchlight at Götaplatsen

A final post with living flame to complete my series for the four Sundays in Advent.

Now in the darkest time of the year torchlight processions are popular, but what these people were doing gathered on the steps at Götaplatsen in the wind and rain on Friday evening I really don’t know. Lucia tåg at Kopparmara

Lucia at Kopparmärra

At midday on 13th December – Lucia, St Lucy’s Day – at Kopparamar a class of school children were celebrating Lucia with traditional songs and costume. Unusually – though very egalitarianly – Lucia (the one with a crown of candles) is personified in this group by a boy. They were collecting for Musikhjälpen (see yesterday’s photo).
For more Lucia: see my gallery of photos from last year’s crowning of Gothenburg’s Lucia.
For more on Kopparmära see Backlight at Kopparmärra. … Continue readingLucia at Kopparmärra

Musikhjälpen 2013 - Emma

Musikhjälpen 2013

The Musikhjälpen (Music Help) “glass box” studio on Gustaf Adolfs Torg at night. Musikhjälpen is the Swedish equivalent of the Dutch Serious Request charity benefit. Three guest DJs are locked away in a public studio for three days and tasked with collecting as much money as possible for the current cause. This year it’s “Alla tjejer har rätt att överleva sin graviditet” (All girls have the right to survive their pregnancies).

Top: On the big screen I think that is Swedish singer Sarah Dawn Finer, one of the three guest DJs locked away for the duration of the campaign.
Below: Another of the guest DJs Kodjo Akolor, comedian and TV/radio personality, strums a donated guitar.
Bottom: Emma Knyckare, Swedish comedian and radio presenter, serious and setting up a track.
